In an interview, Bryce & other members asked about the character’s behavior in the final season. Bryce explained about Eren and said he’s a different character that’s quite fun and exciting to play. He talked about Eren being in a kind of a gray area instead of good & bad!
The official translated statement of Bryce reads, “Yeah. He’s [Eren] very different. And to play him in such a different way is a lot of fun for an actor. So I’m extremely lucky to play Eren in so many different ways. So yeah, and I’m not sure how to feel about him. I don’t know if he’s acting in a bad or a good way. It’s that gray area that’s interesting.”
Bryce even hinted at Eren’s anger by saying that it’s been there for almost 3 seasons, and surprisingly, it is still buried there somewhere.
He added, “But he’s different; that anger that he’s had from the first three seasons, it’s still there, but it’s buried under this coldness. So he knows some things, and I don’t know all the things that Eren knows at this point, so it’s interesting going into it, not knowing everything, and trusting Mike because he knows the show in and out very deeply. And he’s fantastic at what he does.”
Josh then added about Armin and said that he never wanted to be like a big & strong fighter. Instead, Armin intended to build those bridges between people and care for and protect them while they grow more like nurturing them. Josh has hinted at the growth of Armin’s confidence and abilities.
He said, “Right. I don’t know if I would necessarily use the moniker ‘man’ for what Armin has grown into because Armin, like many different characters in this show, is one of the many that go against what we consider traditional gender roles.”
He continued, “He never wanted to be the big, strong fighter or anything like that. He wanted to build bridges between people and he wanted to nurture people, and he wanted to learn about the world and explore the world. And that love, that spirit is still within him, and that has never changed. But yes, he is much more confident than he was in the first season, in his abilities and who he is.”

Eren & Levi’s friendship is at the top of the anime series. Bryce discussed Eren and Levi’s rocky relationship in the interview. Bryce said that the team always had a feeling that Eren is intimidating while he was around Levi. Then, Bryce told a little about how Eren and Levi’s rocky relationship will be in the finale.
“Yeah, I mean, it’s always been, I would say, a rocky relationship between those two ever since Eren had a nice introduction to his boot in season one [laughs]. Ever since then, I think there’s been this fear that Eren has had…he’s always on edge around Levi; he’s just intimidating.”
According to Bryce, Eren is now different from previous seasons and is not afraid of Levi anymore. In addition, Eren has a different sense and power to make the right decisions now.
“But yeah, in this first part of the final season, it seems Eren is different and has just stopped being afraid of him. And again, Eren feels this different power, this different sense of what he’s doing, that the decisions that he’s made are the right ones. And he doesn’t care what anyone else has to say.
He’s made this decision because he knows what should happen and what needs to happen, and nothing will stop that drive to make that happen. So it makes Eren terrifying, and it makes him kind of less afraid of Levi at this point.”
